Southeastern Louisiana University graduate and Emmy-winning ABC Good Morning America host Robin Roberts was honored recently at the 2019 NBA Awards on Turner Network Television with the “Sager Strong Award”.
The Good Morning America team gave tribute to Roberts the following morning on GMA. The Sager Strong Award is named for iconic Turner Sports sideline reporter Craig Sager, who died in 2016 after a battle with cancer, and it’s presented annually to an individual who has been a trailblazer in exemplifying courage, faith, compassion and grace. Roberts was diagnosed in 2007 with breast cancer triggering an outpouring of support from across the nation, and again five years later with a rare blood and bone marrow disease, myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). She aligned with Be the Match to inform the public about the need for more donors and, since her diagnosis, the bone marrow registry has seen a tremendous increase. Roberts joined GMA as co-host in 2005 and has won several Daytime Emmys along with a George Foster Peabody Award and the Walter Cronkite Excellence in Journalism Award. She was also named the winner of the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the 2013 ESPYs for the strength and courage she’s displayed throughout her career. Roberts joined Good Morning America after a storied sports broadcasting career as co-host of ESPN’s “SportsCenter”. She graduated from Southeastern cum laude in 1983 and was a standout on the Lady Lions basketball team. She began her broadcasting career in Mississippi before moving on to Nashville and then Atlanta prior to joining ESPN in Bristol, Ct.
