Former Southeastern Channel news anchor-reporter Paul Rivera will speak at the Southeastern Channel this Thursday, March 12th at 12:30 pm. in Room 133 of the University Center. In just five years after working at the Southeastern Channel and graduating from Southeastern, Rivera has ascended to television news reporting in the 18th largest TV market in the U.S. Now a reporter at WESH-TV 2 (NBC) in Orlando, Fla. (18th largest U.S. market), Rivera will speak on reporting and anchoring in the TV news industry and show selected stories he’s produced at his stops at KLTV Ch. 7 (NBC) in Tyler, Tx. (DMA 114), WIS-TV Ch. 10 (CBS) in Columbia, S.C. (DMA 74), and WESH-TV in Orlando (DMA 18). At WESH Rivera filed reports recently from Puerto Rico while the country was hit with earthquakes. Other recent stories he’s produced for WESH include the historic space launch of Starliner, the search for a missing veteran, shooting deaths at an Orlando New Year’s Eve party, crosswalk changes after a child was killed. While at the Southeastern Channel as anchor-reporter for “Northshore News,” Rivera won multiple first-place regional awards for his news reporting and anchoring given by the Society of Professional Journalists (Louisiana, Mississippi, Arkansas, Tennessee) and Southeast Journalism Conference (eight states in the southeast U.S.) In 2015 he was named Louisiana’s “Student Broadcaster of the Year” given by the Louisiana Association of Broadcasters from all college television and radio students in the state.
