The Southeastern Channel student newscast, “Northshore News,” has been named the best college student newscast in the nation by College Broadcasters, Inc. at its 2021 National Student Production Awards ceremony. The November 11, 2020 episode of “Northshore News” won first place in the “Best Video Newscast” category. “Northshore News” won 2nd in the country in 2019 and “Best College Newscast in the South” for the eighth time earlier this year. The winning episode was produced and anchored by Chris Rosato, currently a news reporter at WAFB-TV Ch. 9 (CBS) in Baton Rouge, and featured news stories from Rosato, Kaylee Normand, and Raychelle Riley, currently a news reporter at WVLA/WGMB Ch. 33/45 (NBC/FOX) in Baton Rouge. Lily Gayle served as co-anchor and also contributed a story along with Kayla Martin and Caroline Fussell, Also winning top national awards given by CBI were Fussell, second place in “Best Hard News Reporting” for “COVID-19 Vaccine”; Rosato, third place in the “Best Hard News Reporting” category for “Mail-In Voting”; Jacqueline Doucet, second place in “Best News Feature Reporting” for “Our Daily Bread”; Joseph Trosclair, second place in the “Best Station Promo” category for his “Halloween at the Southeastern Channel” spot; and Joshua Manuel, second place in the “Best Public Service Announcement” category for “Check the Beep”. The Southeastern Channel had more national winners than any other university in television and video. There were over 1,000 entries submitted in the 2021 competition.
