The Waddell Family Southeastern Channel Sports Media Scholarship is an annual award given to an incoming first-year student seeking an undergraduate degree in sports communication at Southeastern Louisiana University.

The scholarship consists of a $1,000 monetary award for the student’s first academic year along with an internship opportunity with the Southeastern Channel student sports staff.

REQUIREMENTS:

Students must be considered qualified incoming freshmen at Southeastern Louisiana University and are graduates of good academic standing from a secondary school located in the following parishes: Livingston, St. Helena, Tangipahoa, Washington and St. Tammany.  Home-schooled students residing in these areas are also eligible for this award. 

SUBMISSON MATERIALS:

To be considered for this award students must submit:

  1. A brief, 500-word essay detailing the students’ biggest influence within the world of sports media and how this influence has inspired the student to pursue a sports media career.
  2. One of the following options:
    1. A short edit of highlights from a recently organized athletic event along with a “highlight read” voiceover describing the event according to the standards of professional journalism.  Video must have been shot by the scholarship candidate.
    2. A written story or “online post” about a recently organized athletic event with at least one still image from that event.
    3. An example of on-air play-by-play or color commentary from a recent organized athletic event.
  3. A letter of recommendation from a qualified teacher, instructor, or mentor.

NOTES ON SUBMISSION MATERIALS

  1. Video materials should be submitted in the form of links to Youtube or other external sites.
  2. Video and audio sourced from smartphones is acceptable.
  3. Video submissions should be in a “widescreen” format.  If using a smartphone, be sure to shoot “sideways.”
  4. Interviews with players, coaches, and fans are recommended when preparing written and edited “highlight read” submissions.
  5. Stories and on-air work sourced from previous school projects, productions, and events are acceptable for submission.

SCHOLARSHIP FACTS

The monetary award will be applied to the student’s balance by the Southeastern financial aid office. 

The Southeastern Channel internship is an unpaid position granted in the anticipation of future opportunities as a paid member of the Southeastern Channel sports staff.
