The Southeastern Channel’s “Northshore News Update: Coronavirus on the North Shore” has been honored with a national College Coronavirus Coverage Award given by the Society of Professional Journalists in conjunction with the Associated Collegiate Press, the Society for News Design, College Broadcasters, Inc., and the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education. There were entries from nearly 300 universities from throughout the country. The Southeastern Channel was named one of three national broadcast winners for newscasts airing and streaming over the past month, joining Cronkite News at Arizona State University and the Northwestern (Chicago) News Network, a graduate program. Honorable Mentions included the University of Southern California (Annenberg Media), the University of South Dakota, and Appalachian State University. Judges, which included professionals from CNN and other news networks, said of the Southeastern Channel, “They’ve been consistently good every week. The stories, the story choices, the diversity, the mix- all were excellent.” ” The SPJ, ACP, SND, CBI, and FIRE founded the CCC Awards to recognize college journalists who are admirably covering the pandemic even after their campuses have shut down and while struggling with online classes. Through their social media outlets and newsletters, the five organizations will tout the winning Southeastern Channel program to more than 100,000 people. Southeastern Channel student reporters Lorraine Weiskopf, Gabby Cox, Kaylee Normand, and Chris Rosato have produced the newscast, which airs daily on the Southeastern Channel (Spectrum 199, Roku, AppleTV, thesoutheasternchannel.com) with a new episode each Friday at 4 pm.
